The full process:
Step 1: Verbal conversation with your manager
Schedule 30 minutes. In person if possible; video if remote.
Open with: "I have something to share. I've decided to leave [Company]. My last day will be [Date]."
Be brief, calm, professional. Don't backtrack.
Step 2: Send the written notice (same day)
Right after the conversation, send the email.
Hi [Manager],
Following up on our conversation today — please accept this as my formal two weeks' notice. My last day will be [Date].
Happy to support a smooth handoff. Let me know how I can help.
Best, [Your Name]
Step 3: Tell your team
After your manager has been informed. Send a Slack message or wait for a team meeting.
"Wanted to share that I'll be leaving [Company] — last day [Date]. It's been a great chapter; happy to chat about the transition. Will be sure to do solid handoffs."
Step 4: Document handoff
For each ongoing project:
- Who's picking it up
- Where the docs are
- What's still in progress
- What's blocked
Write this down. Your manager will appreciate it.
Step 5: Last two weeks
- Don't slack off. Reputation matters.
- Tie up loose ends.
- Be helpful but don't take on new work.
- Have an honest exit interview if your culture invites it.
What NOT to do
- Tell coworkers before your manager
- Give less than two weeks (unless mutually agreed)
- Burn bridges in the exit interview
- Take confidential information with you
- Disparage the company on LinkedIn
What if your manager reacts badly
- Stay calm.
- Keep the conversation professional.
- Don't agree to stay longer unless you genuinely want to.
- HR exists if things get adversarial.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I tell my manager verbally first?
- Yes. The verbal conversation is the actual moment; the letter is documentation.
- Should I be specific about why I'm leaving?
- In conversation, you can share if you want. In writing, keep it generic — don't put specifics in writing.
- What if my manager pushes back on the timing?
- Be firm. Two weeks is standard. Offer flexibility on handoff details, not on the end date.
- Should I post about leaving on LinkedIn?
- After your last day, sure. Before then, keep it quiet — colleagues may find out the wrong way.
