Resigning as a UI Designer means walking away from Figma files mid-iteration, design system components you built, and stakeholders who've gotten used to pinging you in Slack. The work feels unfinished because it always is — there's always another version, another user flow to test. But leaving cleanly means documenting what matters, handing off the right files, and writing a resignation that doesn't burn bridges in an industry where your next recruiter might be someone's former coworker.

The resignation email subject line

Most UI Designers resign via email first. The subject line should be clear and unambiguous. Avoid vague lines like "Quick update" or "Can we talk?" Your manager should know what the email is about before opening it.

Good subject lines:

  • "Resignation – [Your Name]"
  • "Notice of Resignation – UI Designer"
  • "Two Weeks' Notice"

Template 1 — Short email (paste-ready)

Use this when your relationship with your manager is straightforward and you want to keep it brief.

What to do when there's no HR

Many startups and agencies don't have formal HR. In that case, send your resignation email directly to your manager and CC the founder or whoever handles payroll and benefits. Keep the same tone, but add a line like "Please let me know who I should coordinate with regarding final paycheck, benefits, and equipment return."

"Quiet quitting" vs actually resigning — the resume implications for UI Designer

"Quiet quitting" — doing the minimum, disengaging without formally leaving — has become a meme, but it's a bad strategy for UI Designers. Design is visible work. Your portfolio, your GitHub contributions, your Dribbble posts, the design system you built — they all live online. If you spend six months phoning it in, you have nothing new to show. That gap shows up in interviews when a hiring manager asks what you've been working on lately.

Actual resignation lets you reset. You leave on record as someone who shipped work and transitioned cleanly. You can talk about the role in past tense without hedging. If you're burned out or underpaid, it's better to quit and take a month to rebuild your portfolio than to coast and hope no one notices. Recruiters can tell when a designer has been treading water. The work speaks louder than the job title.

If you're worried about income, consider contract work or freelance projects while you look for the next full-time role. You'll have recent work to show, and it's easier to explain "I went independent for a few months" than "I stayed in a job I'd already checked out of." Resignation is a clean break. Quiet quitting is just a longer, messier version of the same ending.

If you're planning to leave but need a little flexibility before submitting your letter, check out excuses to leave work early — sometimes you need time to interview without raising flags.
