Job Summary
Prepare and administer daily diets, ensuring animals have sufficient water refreshed regularly throughout each day. Implement behavioral enrichment and thoroughly clean and disinfect assigned enclosures while maintaining accurate feeding, health, and welfare records using Species 360, TRACKS, and Microsoft systems. Observe animal behavior for signs of illness or disorder, report irregularities to the supervisor, and assist hospital staff with medication preparation and administration. Train animals in designated sections, assist with crating and moving animals, and participate in guest presentations including onsite classroom programs and zoo encounters. Complete animal welfare assessments, solve welfare concerns, and write protocols and routines for the assigned section as needed. Safely operate a vehicle for business purposes and adhere to organizational protocols while maintaining high standards of animal care and guest experience.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma
- Strong verbal and written English skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public
- Valid California driver's license
- Valid vehicle insurance
- Enrollment in the CA Employer Pull Notice program
- Successful completion of the FCZC Drivers Training Program
- Minimum of three (3) months of part-time (377 hours) paid animal experience in a zoological or animal facility
- Minimum six (6) months related paid experience in a zoological or wildlife facility
- Minimum eighteen (18) months of paid experience in a zoological or wildlife facility
- Minimum six (6) months of experience implementing goal-based enrichment applications to encourage natural behaviors
- Minimum six (6) months of paid experience in applying classical and operant conditioning techniques to train domestic or exotic animals
- Minimum six (6) months of experience with completion of formal welfare assessments and problem-solving solutions to address well-being concerns
- Minimum five and half (5.5) years of paid experience in a zoological or wildlife facility
- Minimum three (3) years of experience developing behavioral husbandry programs that involve applying classical and operant conditioning techniques and goal-based enrichment
- Minimum three (3) years of experience with completion of formal welfare assessments and problem-solving solutions to address well-being concerns
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and kneel throughout the shift
- Ability to use both hands and arms for care of animals and cleaning of enclosures
- Ability to climb stairs or ladders throughout the shift
- Ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Hearing and sense of smell
- Visual acuity to read printed instructions and safety information
- Ability to assess animal behavior
- Color perception
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction
- Ability to work at heights
- Ability to work in close proximity to Zoo animals
- Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays
