Job Summary
Observes and evaluates animal condition, behavior, and responses and communicates observations orally and in reports. Prepares and feeds appropriate diets, noting conformance to prescribed diets. Administers prescribed medications and dietary supplements and monitors food and medicine consumption. Maintains enclosures and structures for safety and welfare of animals, visitors, and staff. Provides enrichment to improve quality of life of the animal collection and trains selected animals through operant conditioning for veterinary procedures and public demonstrations. Installs exhibit furnishings safely and maintains clean, organized keeper areas; performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance. Summary also includes training, enrichment, and maintenance duties to support ongoing zoo operations.
Required Qualifications
- One year of experience in animal care in a zoo setting or under the direction of a licensed veterinarian (internships, volunteer experience, or employment accepted)
- Extensive domestic animal experience may qualify for substitution for exotic animal management experience
- Specific training and work experience in other settings (e.g., aquaculture, schools, nature centers, agricultural operations, conservation centers) may be considered on a case-by-case basis as fulfillment for the experience requirements
