Job Summary

Maintain specific zone assignments across the Medical University of South Carolina facilities using power and hand tools for corrective maintenance and repairs ranging from minor to extensive. Diagnose equipment problems and find solutions across carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other fields while adhering to established trade practices. Perform occasional monitoring or supervision when new assignments are given, with work originating from the Hospital Help Desk, FSC, Maintenance Manager, or Supervisor. Considered essential personnel in disaster situations, this journeyman role requires working in all weather conditions, elevated areas, and confined spaces, including overtime or irregular hours as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years maintenance experience in a hospital, or diversified building maintenance, or construction
  • Ability to work different fields of maintenance (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, etc.)
  • Ability to diagnose equipment problems and find solutions
  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work outside, in all weather conditions and temperature extremes
  • Ability to work in elevated areas
  • Ability to work below ground
  • Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required
  • Ability to stand
  • Ability to climb
  • Ability to kneel
  • Ability to bend
  • Ability to walk
  • Ability to handle heavy tools (i.e. jackhammer)
  • Ability to lift, unassisted, weight to 50 lbs
  • Ability to carry objects, unassisted, on a plane, on ladders, upstairs, etc., weighing 50 lbs or less
  • Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes
  • Ability to hear and understand whispered conversations at 3 feet
  • Ability to perceive colors accurately
  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction
  • Ability to operate winches, come-along, jacks, etc
  • Ability to maintain dexterity to use hand tools, both manual and powered
  • Ability to push or pull equipment carts
  • Ability to work in a latex safe environment
  • Commercial driver's license (for some positions)
  • EPA approved freon recovery certification (for some positions)
  • Ability to work overtime or irregular hours when needed

Desired Qualifications

  • Technical or Trade School in HVAC, electrical, electronics related to industrial maintenance or other related field
  • Electrical and mechanical experience
