Job Summary
Operate the Wastewater Treatment Plant on assigned shifts, regulating flows and processes via valves and controls while monitoring gauges, managing sludge, and performing basic laboratory tests. Maintain plant and grounds in sanitary condition through sweeping, mowing, and general maintenance tasks. Execute heavy physical labor, including operating pickup, utility, dump, and sludge trucks, and grease motors and pumps. Perform basic sampling, wastewater testing, and operate diesel-powered emergency generators. Informs supervisors of malfunctions and works inside and outside in all weather conditions. General hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM or 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with rotating weekend and evening coverage. Subject to emergency calls and on-call duty. Certification by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to operate the plant is required within four years of hire.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must have and maintain a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania motor vehicle operator's license
- 3 years clean driving history
- Must be eligible for assigned on-call and standby duty
- Must be able to perform heavy physical labor
- Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Must be able to read and write at the level required for successful job performance
- Must be able to work unusual shifts, weekends, evenings and holidays when required
- Must complete at least one wastewater treatment course annually which is acceptable to the State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Systems Operators
- Must obtain within four (4) years from the date of hire certification by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to operate the Chambersburg Wastewater Treatment Plant which is a Class A, Type 1
- Must complete within one (1) year from the date of hire, Arc Flash electrical safety training
Desired Qualifications
- Preference shall be given to individuals with work experience at an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant
