Job Summary
Organize and manage 5-day whitewater treks in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve while serving as Manager on Duty for evacuations and logistical support. Train, manage, and supervise trek leads on all program and safety aspects, while modeling the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions. Maintain trek equipment in good working condition and ensure a clean, organized, inspected, and safe work area. Manage and supervise guests to guarantee safety and program quality. This role requires a minimum age of 21 and experience as a commercial Trip Leader on the New River in West Virginia. Candidates must be competent Class 1-3 whitewater paddlers, hold a valid driver's license with a Summit Driving permit, and be willing to become a registered Scouting America member. Work involves 45-55 hours daily, including up to 8 hours of hiking and lifting 70 pounds, with housing provided in a staff camp tent.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum age: 21+
- Experienced and documented commercial Trip Leader on the New River in West Virginia
- Competent Class 1-3 whitewater paddler/oarsman
- Strong multi-day rafting trip knowledge
- Valid driver license
- Able to obtain a Summit Driving permit
- Willing to become a registered Scouting America member
- Ability to stand, walk, and hike up to 8 hours daily
- Ability to lift/move up to 70 pounds
Desired Qualifications
- Able to become Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication
- High-level emotional intelligence (such as self/social awareness and team dynamics)
- Positive and cheerful attitude with a strong customer-service focus
- Adaptability in a fast-paced environment with ability to learn/develop hard and soft skills
- Ability to connect with individuals from diverse age groups, maturity, and backgrounds
