Job Summary

Apply basic welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, or repair metal parts using Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW) for steel or Gas Metal Arc (GMAW) for aluminum. Work from blueprints and engineering sketches to fabricate complex structural, mechanical, and equipment foundations, positioning pieces in jigs and fixtures with measuring instruments. Remove old structural materials and foundations while maintaining certification in welding procedures and completing Objective Quality Evidence forms. Perform all tasks in accordance with established safety procedures and participate in special projects as required. Maintain certification in welding procedures as required by Quality Assurance Manager.

Required Qualifications

  • 1-5 years related experience
  • High School Diploma or GED, plus technical/vocational training or the equivalent combination
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed
  • Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data basis
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, written technical instructions and manuals
  • Must possess working knowledge of welding procedures and tools
  • Knowledge of welding shrinkage, welding techniques and physical properties of metal
  • Must be able to qualify using welding procedures on plate and/or pipe
  • Must be able to pass Workmanship Inspection training
  • Must be able to read and understand material safety data sheets (MDS)
  • Able to follow safety procedures
  • Must be able to pass the vision test
  • Frequently the employee is required to carry objects that might weigh up to 50 pounds
  • The employee must be able to pass the vision test

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in the marine welding/fitter trade gained through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of welding standards of SMAW, GMAW, GTAW and/or FCAW welding procedures
  • Skill to make complete penetration and complete fusion welds
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications
