Job Summary
Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits while welding components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. Ignite torches, start power supplies, and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals, then clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, and bolt parts to obtain required configurations. Detect faulty equipment or defective materials, notify supervisors, and examine work pieces for defects using straightedges or templates. Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, including gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding processes. Monitor fitting, burning, and welding to avoid overheating, warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion. Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers. Position will consistently dictate 40-60 hours per week with frequent overtime demands, requiring some six-day weeks when workload demands exist.
Required Qualifications
- Able to read, speak and write English
- Strong physical and mental health to maintain demanding workload
- Able to work under stressful conditions at times
- Climbing - able to go up and down stairs
- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things
- Able to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats when needed, including welding safety equipment
- Position will consistently dictate 40 - 60 hours per week with frequent overtime demands based on the workload requirements
- Position will require some (6) six day weeks when workload demands, with time off scheduled per current workload and other staff availability
- Must stay in position for at least two (2) years depending on prior experience before promoting to Welder II
Desired Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required
- Minimum one (1) year work related skill, knowledge, and hands on experience or vocational training preferred, but not required
