Job Summary
Welder/Mechanic role at the San Diego Convention Center focusing on welding and mechanical maintenance of equipment and machinery. Responsibilities include FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, and SMAW welding, fabrication solutions, inspection and repair of equipment (forklifts, scissor lifts, generators, vehicles, doors, HVAC components, and related systems), interpreting blueprints and welding symbols, performing repairs on engines and mechanical systems, documenting work in CMMS, ensuring conformity to building standards and codes, supervising safety and hazard controls, and updating drawings/documentation as needed. Requires a High School Diploma or GED with a craft apprenticeship and three years journeyman experience (or equivalent), valid California driver’s license, ability to read technical drawings and contracts, strong communication, and proficiency with Microsoft apps/ERP systems. This is a union position (IBEW Local 569) with schedule determined by seniority and open availability required. The role is on-site in San Diego, CA, within a 24/7 operation.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus successful completion of a craft apprenticeship program or on the job training program providing journeyman level experience; and three years related journeyman level experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must have a valid California driver’s license
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building drawings, specifications, shop drawings, schematics, manufacturer’s specifications, electrical studies, and other reference material
- Ability to read and understand various construction/maintenance contracts, technical procedures, and governmental regulations
- Ability to effectively discuss technical information and respond to questions from individuals or groups of employees, clients, customers, and the general public
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of numerical representation
- Ability to interpret a variety of technically diverse instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Robust knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as ERP systems
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply safety and risk management policies
- Exposure and safety considerations related to welding and mechanical maintenance
- Split shift ability and flexibility to support a 24/7 operation
