Job Summary
Conduct MIG and TIG welding on ladder construction, cradles, oil tanks, turntables, platforms, and waterways per drawings and specifications. Interpret mechanical drawings, operate oxy/acetylene equipment, and clamp, tack-weld, and grind components to achieve required configurations. Monitor welding processes to prevent material warping, examine work pieces for defects, and maintain welding equipment. Finish grinding applications and ensure daily housekeeping. Confer with associates to achieve production schedules and adhere to all safety rules. Pass welder qualification tests within the first year of employment.
Required Qualifications
- One year experience in various forms of welding
- Proficient in assigned welding techniques
- Perform MIG and/or TIG welding
- Weld components in a flat, vertical, or overhead position
- Interpretation of mechanical drawings, including weld requirement symbology
- Knowledge of wire and filler materials applications for various steel alloys and aluminum
- Working knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters (amps, volts, etc.)
- Operate oxy/acetylene burning equipment
- Able to ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind and/or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux covered arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding and submerged arc welding
- Monitor the fitting, burning and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion or expansion of material
- Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
- Recognize, set up and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment
- Lay out, position, align and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers
- Conventional and precision measuring instruments
- Process inspection, certification, and documentation
- Welding equipment maintenance. Detect faulty operation of equipment or materials and notify supervisors
- Finish grinding applications using manual and power tools
- Housekeeping clean and sweep areas daily
- Confer with and assist other associates to ensure production schedules are achieved
- Other duties as assigned by the area supervisor
- Ability to pass welder qualification test within first year of employment per AWS D1.1 and/or D1.2 as required
- Able to correctly use required PPE
- Must be able to read and write in English
- Possess basic math knowledge
- Read tape measure
- Possess a satisfactory safety record and be aware of others safety, including own. Understand and follow all safety rules

- The ability to keep the hand and arm steady while making an arm movement or while holding the arm and hand in one position
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
- Able to speak and hear
- Required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl
- The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds
- All positions require the ability to lift 50 pounds
- Must be able to read blueprints, fabricate parts
Desired Qualifications
- Vertical/horizontal/overhead welding experience preferred
- High School Graduate or equivalent
