Job Summary
Welder Assistant at Watco in Birmingham responsible for repairing and maintaining equipment and railcars to meet quality standards. Performs MIG welding with flux core on A36/A53 carbon steel, including butt, lap, tee, horizontal, and overhead welds. Uses cutting torch, air arc cutter, grinder, and hand tools; fabricates with various metalworking tools; maintains maintenance/repair records; adheres to safety rules and company guidelines; demonstrates basic math and mechanical skills including tape measure reading; wears PPE (steel toe boots, eye/ear protection, gloves, hot work PPE, fall protection, respirators). Must pass welding tests (D15.1 or M1002) and follow blueprints/schematics to successfully complete tasks.
Required Qualifications
- High School or GED equivalent
- Basic knowledge of tools used to weld, cut and torch metal
- Ability to pass D15.1 or M1002 weld test (horizontal, vertical, overhead)
- Read blueprints and schematics
- Basic math and mechanical skills
- Ability to read a tape measure
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to independently establish work tasks
