Job Summary

Fabricate, assemble, and weld thin gauge metal components for timber and metal doors using MIG and TIG techniques on zincanized, galvanized, mild steel, and stainless steel. Grind, clean, and polish steel surfaces; inspect completed welds for quality and structural integrity. Operate bending and cutting machinery to fabricate profile lengths while reading workshop drawings and identifying material types. Fit components using jigs and perform general jobbing work for special hardware. Conduct quality control checks on own work, complete required paperwork, and report defective goods. Maintain equipment and keep the work area clean and safe while complying with WHS guidelines. Work day shifts Monday to Thursday in Cheltenham, VIC, with steady ongoing work and a full-time 37.5-hour schedule.

Required Qualifications

  • Sheet metal or equivalent work experience
  • Welding experience
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to follow direction as well as the ability to work independently
  • Must be able to read a tape measure, pressure gauge, level and square
  • Must be able to operate sheet metal machinery and welding equipment
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs

Desired Qualifications

  • Must be able to read and understand workshop drawings
  • Must be able to identify different material types and thicknesses
  • Must be able to conduct quality control checks on own Work
  • Must be able to complete assigned work within given timeframe and according to specification
  • Must be able to grind and clean all steel, polish stainless Steel
  • Must be able to inspect completed welds for quality and accuracy, ensuring they meet required standards and structural integrity
  • Must be able to adjust components where necessary using a grinder or other cutting tools
  • Must be able to fit components using jigs
  • Must be able to perform general jobbing work fitting special hardware
  • Must be able to fabricate profile lengths using bending and cutting machinery
  • Must be able to MIG and TIG light gauge steel 1.1mm to 3mm – Zincaneal, Galvabond, Mild Steel and Stainless Steel
  • Must be able to fabricate, assemble and weld thin gauge metal components to various specifications as required from relevant detailed drawings
  • Must be able to maintain production levels as required
  • Must be able to comply with standards and procedures of Spence Doors following WHS guidelines and wear personal protective equipment
  • Must be able to report defective goods
  • Must be able to perform basic equipment maintenance
  • Must be able to keep your work area clean and safe
