Job Summary

Lead outdoor education and recreational programming for campers ages 7-17, delivering activities such as archery, climbing, canoeing, and hiking while adapting instruction to diverse skill levels. Teach engaging natural history classes and actively supervise campers throughout all assigned areas, proactively addressing needs to ensure a seamless experience. Plan and prepare all sessions in advance, maintaining equipment, facilities, and the natural environment while enforcing strict safety rules and emergency procedures. Perform general camp duties including cabin cleaning, assisting with evening programs, and contributing to larger projects as requested. Work 2-3 weekends per month following directives from Program Coordinators and Directors.

Required Qualifications

  • Formal education, usually obtained by a High School Diploma/GED
  • Training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
  • Specialized training in science, education, recreation, or a related field
  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience in outdoor education
  • Related experience to outdoor education
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience working with children ages 7-17
  • Visual and auditory ability and physical capacity to quickly identify, assess, and respond effectively to critical incidents and emergencies
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities
  • Ability to consistently enforce safety regulations
  • Ability to correctly apply appropriate camp policies and procedures to mitigate risk
  • Physical ability to lead and interact in group activities
  • Physical ability to perform related physical skills including standing, walking, hiking, and/or climbing for extended periods of time
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Competency in planning, organizing, and preparing materials and spaces required for daily activities
  • Ability to ensure sessions start on time
  • Ability to ensure sessions are well-structured
  • Ability to execute sessions smoothly
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • A warm, approachable demeanor when interacting with children, parents, and community members
  • Ability to utilize hands-on teaching methods
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to deliver high-quality, memorable instructional sessions
  • Ability to manage groups effectively in an outdoor setting
  • Competency in natural history
  • Competency in ecology
  • Competency in outdoor recreation
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into engaging, age-appropriate lessons for campers (ages 7-17)
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively within a staff team
  • Flexibility and adaptability when schedules change
  • Adaptability when unforeseen program needs arise
  • CPR/AED Certification
  • First Aid Certification
  • CPR/AED certification must include Adult and Child/Infant
  • CPR/AED certification obtained within 30 days of hire
  • CPR/AED certification from American Red Cross
  • CPR/AED certification from American Heart Association
  • CPR/AED certification from American Safety & Health Institute
  • Must be available 2-3 weekends per month
