Job Summary

Remove snow and ice using snow removal or sanding equipment, and maintain highway surfaces including signs, guardrails, lighting, and striping. Operate vehicles and equipment for surface and right-of-way maintenance, repair slopes, berms, and drains, and control vegetation growth. Set up and remove traffic control devices as required, and transport crew and equipment to work sites. Be available for emergency response rotations covering overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Perform basic mathematical functions and follow all safety policies while communicating with co-workers and supervisors.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Ontario Class DZ driver's license
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Successful completion of training in traffic control methods
  • Successful completion of training in first aid
  • Successful completion of training in transportation of dangerous goods
  • Successful completion of training in WHMIS
  • Successful completion of training in job related aspects of Occupational Health
  • Minimum of three (3) years related work experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial/industrial repair, maintenance or landscaping (outdoor work)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted
  • Ability to recognize hazards inherent in routine and non-routine tasks
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers' safety instructions
  • Ability to think clearly and focus on safety in immediate surroundings while using tools, equipment, driving, or operating equipment
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions
  • Ability to consistently follow all policies and procedures
  • Ability to understand and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to work in an environment in which demands and priorities change rapidly
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools
  • Skill in the use of traffic control devices
  • Skill in the use of mobile equipment such as tractors, graders, mowers, sweepers, augers and other types of equipment used for surface and right of way maintenance and repair
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to your job
  • Ability to work in outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold
  • Ability to work in wet and/or humid conditions
  • Ability to work in high precarious places
  • Ability to handle fume or airborne particles
  • Ability to handle toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Ability to handle insects
  • Ability to handle reptiles/rodents
  • Ability to tolerate moderate to high noise levels
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment as required for surface and right-of-way maintenance and repair
  • Ability to repair and maintain slopes, berms, culverts, drains, etc.
  • Ability to control vegetation appearance and growth
  • Ability to perform removal of snow and ice by using snow removal and/or sanding equipment
  • Ability to maintain and repair highway and other surfaces including signs, guardrails, fence, lighting, potholes, striping, adding or replacing reflectors, litter and debris removal
  • Ability to perform traffic control setup and removal
  • Ability to transport crew and equipment to work sites
  • Ability to be available for emergency response rotations as needed for overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years related work experience in construction, road maintenance, commercial/industrial repair, maintenance or landscaping (outdoor work) (Preferred)
