Job Summary
O&M Tech (Collection/Distribution) operates equipment and monitors mechanical performance to ensure efficient water and wastewater system function. Responsibilities include preventive and corrective maintenance, repairs, inspections, reading and servicing water meters, responding to customer service calls and emergency utility situations, and performing sewer and water service work. The role involves working independently and in a team, with on-call 24/7 availability and adherence to safety/PPE protocols. CDL is strongly preferred, with training to obtain additional certifications as needed. Based in Alpena, MI, the technician will support the City of Alpena water/sewer utility infrastructure, including distribution, sanitary collection, lift stations, and related facilities. Proficiency in reading meters, data recording, basic computer/office tasks, and operating equipment is required, along with strong math, writing, and verbal communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED is required
- Less than 2 years in water utility or public works, distribution, sanitary collections or varied maintenance/operations/construction
- State of Michigan – Driver's License
- State of Michigan – CDL class B, class A preferred
- State of Michigan Water Operator Distribution S-4 or higher, S2 preferred
- Required to obtain S-4 or higher within 2 years of employment
- State of Michigan Water Operator Collections certificate achievement when available/required
- Availability for emergency situations 24/7 and on-call rotations
