Job Summary
Operate, monitor, and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping facilities while performing preventive maintenance on mechanical, chemical, and biological systems. Conduct laboratory tests, collect samples, and safely distribute treatment chemicals in compliance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulations. Inspect and repair electromechanical equipment, document instrument readings, and prepare required regulatory reports. Respond to public inquiries and service requests, adhering to emergency protocols for severe weather and natural disasters. Work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays as essential personnel. Complete specialized training programs and obtain necessary operator licenses within 18 months of hire.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to obtain Florida Water and Wastewater Operator licenses in compliance with FDEP requirements within 18 months of hire
- Ability to exert moderate physical effort involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects of moderate weight (12-20 pounds)
- Ability to perceive and discriminate colors, shades, sounds, odors, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals
- Ability to communicate orally
- 20/40 vision (in at least one eye)
- Ability to hear and understand and verbally communicate in English at normal conversational levels
- Ability to easily carry 50 lbs
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to maintain safe work practices
- Ability to respond to emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work during emergency operations, including severe weather events and natural disasters
- Ability to participate in emergency preparedness and response activities
- Ability to complete required NIMS (National Incident Management System) training
- Knowledge of FDEP regulations and compliance requirements for water and wastewater facilities
- Knowledge of hazardous chemical handling, storage, and transportation practices
- Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems common to treatment plant operations
- Knowledge of chemical and biological processes in water and wastewater treatment
- Skill in using hand tools, power tools, light vehicles, tractors, and dump trucks
- Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in all weather conditions
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to distinguish colors used in process indicators
- Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, in English
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions, technical manuals, and safety
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations required for laboratory testing and chemical dosing
- Ability to work flexible schedules
- Ability to respond to emergency callouts
- Must be able to effectively lead and coach others
- Strong attention to detail
- Must be available for weekend shifts
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
Desired Qualifications
- Completion of specialized water and wastewater training programs
- One (1) to two (2) years of experience in water and wastewater plant operations
