Job Summary

Operate water treatment systems involving chemical, physical, and microbiological processes while monitoring plant operations through SCADA, instrumentation, and laboratory results. Respond to alarms, equipment failures, and operational emergencies by adjusting treatment processes and diagnosing problems. Collect water samples, perform analyses, maintain accurate logs, and calibrate instrumentation to ensure safe drinking water production. Perform preventive maintenance, assist with basin cleaning and grounds upkeep, and train other employees. Work varying shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays at any RWSA facility, reporting for duty during inclement weather and emergencies. Requires a Class 1 Waterworks Operator License and ability to work in active environments with physical demands.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid, unrestricted Virginia driver's license
  • Current Virginia Class 1 Waterworks Operator License
  • Progressive experience operating and overseeing water treatment processes
  • Ability to work varying shifts and report to any RWSA water treatment facility as operational needs require
  • Working knowledge of the chemical, mechanical, electrical, and physical processes involved in water treatment
  • Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, safety rules, maintenance instructions, and technical manuals
  • Ability to analyze treatment data and make sound process-control decisions
  • Ability to perform calculations involving chemical dosages, flow rates, percentages, volume, area, ratios, and other water treatment measurements
  • Ability to troubleshoot treatment processes, instrumentation, and mechanical equipment
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports, logs, and correspondence
  • Ability to use computers, spreadsheets, SCADA systems, and standard office equipment
  • Ability to operate power tools, vehicles, treatment plant machinery, and related equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, regulators, and members of the public
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, work on ladders or catwalks, and enter confined or elevated spaces in accordance with applicable safety procedures
  • Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds

Desired Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's or Associate's degree in environmental science, water treatment, engineering technology, or a related field
