Job Summary
Monitor and repair water leaks, install, replace, and fix hydrants, valves, and fittings. Locate line leaks manually or with electronic devices, dig, backfill, and shore excavations as required. Flush water lines, maintain reservoirs and tanks, and repair sidewalks and landscaping damaged by pipeline work. Direct laborers and related personnel on job sites when a Foreman is absent. Respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis. Perform work in accordance with City and department safety rules while maintaining accurate records and sketches of installations.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the craft
- military training
- equivalent training at an accredited trade or technical school
- Three (3) years of experience in the installation and/or repair of pipelines field
- experience in repair of appurtenances for fire and potable water distribution
- current, valid Class C (Class 1) PA Motor Vehicle Operator's License
- Ability to read job related maps and blueprints
- Ability to use basic mathematics in estimating materials needed for job repairs and record keeping
- Ability to use power tools, such as a jackhammer and/or drill in hazardous conditions such as pressurized gas lines and other utility lines while excavating
- Ability to use other tools such as water leak locator
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to keep records of work performed
- Ability to make sketches
- Ability to take accurate measurements of installations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, outside agencies, and the general public
- Availability to work all three shifts
- Availability to work weekends
- Availability to work holidays
- Subject to remain on duty beyond normal hours
- Subject to recall during emergency situations
- Subject to recall during other extensive periods
- Ability to successfully pass a thorough investigation consisting of a criminal history check
- Ability to successfully pass verification of prior employment and performance
- Ability to successfully pass reference checks
- Ability to successfully pass credentials checks
- Ability to successfully pass credit history checks (in some cases)
