Job Summary
Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plants to ensure continuous treatment of influent and effluent while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations. Control treatment processes, manage chemical additives, and adjust operations based on SCADA data, laboratory results, and flow variations. Inspect facilities, perform preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems, and coordinate repairs as needed. Collect samples, maintain accurate operational logs, and prepare regulatory reports. Respond to alarms or call-outs within 30 minutes, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with participation in on-call rotation and seasonal snow plowing. Requires valid Colorado driver's license and ability to work in all weather conditions while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Valid Colorado Driver's license
- Acceptable driving record
- Physical capability to operate vehicles safely
- Capability to lift up to 60 lbs
- Capability to climb into confined spaces
- Capability to work outdoors during all seasons and all-weather conditions
- Capability to work with chemicals
- Capability to perform prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and stretching
- Manual dexterity to operate and use various tools, devices, and equipment
- Physical agility
- Wastewater Operator Class A, B, C or D license
- Ability to obtain Wastewater Operator Class D license within 6 months of hire if unlicensed
- Current Colorado Class A Water Operators Certification (for Operator A)
- Current Colorado Class B Water Operators Certification (for Operator B)
- Current Colorado Class C Water Operators Certification (for Operator C)
- Current Colorado Class D Water Operators Certification (for Operator D or Trainee)
- Minimum of 4 years related experience for Operator A
- Minimum of 3 years related experience for Operator B
- Minimum of 2 years related experience for Operator C
- Minimum of 6 months to 1 year related experience for Operator D or Trainee
- Knowledge of safety requirements and best practices
- Knowledge of pumps, valves, motors, filters, backflow prevention devices, piping, and plumbing structures
- Knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, mathematics, and hydrology
- Knowledge of chemical analysis and testing techniques
- Knowledge of the use of standard office equipment including personal computer, spreadsheet and word processor software applications
- Ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operations
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to produce clearly written documents
- Competency in automated wastewater treatment process control and HMI/SCADA software applications
- Ability to perform mathematical computations
- Ability to keep accurate work records
- Ability to monitor and maintain chemical additive inventory
- Ability to work cooperatively with other town employees, consultants, contractors, upper management, and the public
- Ability to respond to an alarm or a call-out within 30 minutes
- Availability to work evening/weekends/holidays in emergency situations
- Availability to work on duty call as scheduled
- Capability to wear personal protective equipment as necessary (hard hat, safety shoes, work gloves, safety glasses, etc.)
