Job Summary

The Waste Management Manager will oversee all aspects of groundwater sampling, surface water monitoring, drilling, and well rehabilitation/maintenance waste activities for LANL under LLCC, including waste identification, characterization, collection, storage, packaging, and disposal. Responsibilities include updating purge water and tank inventories, preparing reports and data packages for disposition approval, planning characterization sampling, and ensuring compliance with RCRA, permit requirements, and regulatory guidance. The role involves coordinating with internal project personnel, managing waste storage equipment (e.g., frac tanks, poly tanks, drums, totes), and providing guidance on waste streams (New Mexico Special Waste, RCRA, radioactive, TSCA). The incumbent will develop procedures to ensure compliance, conduct audits, support external regulatory audits, and enter information into LANL’s Waste Compliance and Tracking System (WCATS) or equivalent. Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills are required to convey technical information to diverse audiences, and the position requires collaboration within a project team and with client Waste Management teams. Training on RCRA and permit requirements, along with broad regulatory knowledge and DOE waste management experience, are essential to perform duties and adapt to changing regulatory guidance.

Required Qualifications

  • BS in engineering or environmental science or related field; high school diploma or equivalent may be accepted based on experience in waste management
  • 5-8 years of environmental waste management experience preferred
  • ability to obtain a federal security clearance
  • working knowledge of DOE waste management software (preferably WCATS or IWTS)
  • working knowledge of regulations for radioactive and hazardous waste, RCRA hazardous waste permit requirements (EPA, DOT, DOE)
  • ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; ability to develop and present technical documents, test plans, and training materials
  • experience with waste inventory management, characterization sampling, and disposition planning
  • ability to interface with internal project personnel and external regulatory bodies
  • experience with internal audits and regulatory audits
  • familiarity with waste streams including New Mexico Special Waste, RCRA waste, radioactive waste, TSCA waste
  • ability to operate in a team-oriented project environment
  • proficiency with Microsoft Office software
