VP - Senior Counsel

Job Summary

Design enterprise-wide risk frameworks, negotiate master service agreements, and streamline the commercial contract lifecycle across asset and property management lines. Formulate proactive compliance strategies for affordable housing mandates and act as the primary legal interface with municipal agencies and elected officials. Oversee the operational litigation portfolio, direct outside counsel on defense strategies, and manage legal spend while conducting routine corporate risk assessments. Advise on HR policies and audit accessibility frameworks to resolve fair housing and civil rights complaints. This role requires a Juris Doctor and eight-plus years of in-house legal experience, with a strong preference for affordable housing and real estate operational backgrounds. Full-time remote position with competitive compensation.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum eight (8+) years of law firm or in-house legal experience
  • Experience in a corporate in-house operations role
  • Deep, high-level understanding of real estate operational mechanics
  • Deep, high-level understanding of commercial insurance structures
  • Deep, high-level understanding of systemic regulatory risks
  • Proficient in legal research and writing
  • Ability to make practical, business-focused recommendations
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook)
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school
  • Active member in good standing of a state bar
  • Effective communicator — able to translate complex legal matters into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal staff
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of matters
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Solutions-oriented with a proactive, hands-on approach to legal support
  • Flexible — able to prioritize competing demands, address issues as they arise, and adapt quickly when needed
  • Exercises sound business judgment and professionalism at all times
  • Resourceful; effective research and problem-solving skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with affordable housing regulatory frameworks (LIHTC, HUD, state HFA / housing authority programs)
  • Prior in-house counsel experience in a property management, real estate, or affordable housing environment
  • Admission in NY, NJ, MD, PA, VA, and/or CO
