VP of Engineering
Remote · San Francisco, California, United States
Job Summary
Lead and build Freed's AI-native engineering organization to ship healthcare AI products faster with clear ownership, strong technical leadership, and high product quality. You will guide engineering velocity and organizational performance, develop an engineering leadership layer (EMs, tech leads, senior ICs), and partner with the CEO, CTO, Product, Design, GTM, Clinical, and Customer Success to align engineering with clinician needs and company strategy. You will stay close to implementation realities—reading code, evaluating tradeoffs, using AI coding tools, and challenging engineers from real technical context—without needing to personally own production features. You will champion AI-native workflows (agentic coding, AI-assisted reviews, test maintenance, production triage, rapid prototyping), create pragmatic planning/design/testing processes, and lead through ambiguity and resource tradeoffs while maintaining trust and quality.
Required Qualifications
- Experience leading engineering teams in fast-moving startup or high-growth product environments
- Strong technical judgment across product architecture, backend systems, frontend systems, infrastructure, reliability, security, and developer productivity
- Hands-on fluency with modern AI development workflows and ability to prototype, inspect, debug, or validate technical work with AI assistance
- Track record of developing engineering managers, technical leaders, and high-performing ICs
- Strong product and business judgment with ability to contribute beyond engineering to roadmap, GTM, customer, and company strategy decisions
- Clear operating instincts around org design, accountability, prioritization, planning, and execution cadence
- High hiring bar and ability to attract, assess, and close exceptional engineering talent
- Direct, high-context communication and comfort operating with urgency while maintaining quality and trust
