Job Summary
Conduct daily practices and games while maintaining discipline, adjusting grievances, and safeguarding student athletes. Implement school, state, and conference regulations; train staff; and evaluate assistant effectiveness. Manage equipment inventory, storage, and reconditioning; ensure facility cleanliness; and submit injury paperwork within 24 hours. Coordinate tournament logistics, assist in budgeting, and promote the sport through media relations and community recruitment. Provide guidance on college selection and maintain positive relationships with parents, officials, and the booster club.
Required Qualifications
- Administrative and organizational skills
- Thorough knowledge of Catawba County Schools athletic policy and procedure
- Knowledge of North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community
- Teacher license
- Employment as a teacher by the Catawba County Board of Education
- Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport

- Ability to provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites
- Ability to advise the Athletic Director and recommend policy, method or procedural changes
- Ability to provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete
- Ability to give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct
- Ability to be present at all practices and games
- Ability to provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant
- Ability to initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies
- Ability to complete and submit proper paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries to athletic office within 24 hours
- Ability to direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians
- Ability to determine discipline
- Ability to delineate procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary
- Ability to contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible
- Ability to assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection
- Ability to participate in the budgeting function with the Athletic Director
- Ability to establish requirements for the next season
- Ability to recommend guidelines as to type, style, color, or technical specifications of equipment
- Ability to operate within budget appropriations
- Ability to be accountable for all equipment and/or collection of fees for any lost or unreturned equipment
- Ability to arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment
- Ability to submit annual inventory and current records
- Ability to properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing
- Ability to monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices
- Ability to authorize who may enter, issue or requisition equipment
- Ability to permit the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times
- Ability to examine locker rooms before and after practices and games
- Ability to check on general cleanliness of the facility
- Ability to be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment
- Ability to secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building
- Ability to instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use
- Ability to organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre-season meetings
- Ability to promote the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program
- Ability to promote the sport outside the school through news media, community recreation programs, or in any other feasible manner
- Ability to be responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media
- Ability to maintain good public relations with news media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans
- Ability to present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results
- Ability to perform other duties as assigned by the school Principal in keeping with Catawba County Board of Education Policy and North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes
