Job Summary
The Visually Impaired Orientation Counselor II — Technology Specialist focuses on helping Nebraskans who are blind or visually impaired achieve independence by delivering instruction in daily living skills, Braille, cane travel, home management, and assistive technology. Responsibilities include evaluating clients to set attainable goals, conducting technology assessments, recommending assistive technology, developing and implementing instructional programs, preparing progress reports, training new staff, and potentially leading a team of Orientation Counselors. The role requires travel across the district, collaboration with clients, families, guardians, and social service agencies, and ongoing professional development and CVRCB certification.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in social science, behavioral science, social work, counseling/guidance, vocational rehabilitation, psychology, sociology, human development, education, healthcare, business, information technology, computer science, assistive/adaptive technology, or related and two years’ experience; OR Master’s degree in any of the above-mentioned fields or related area and one year of experience
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- This position requires travel
- Regular and reliable attendance is required
- Maintaining of the CVRCB Certification, once acquired on the job, is required
- Knowledge of teaching and instructing individuals; leadership techniques; blindness philosophies; various educational modalities as they pertain to rehabilitation of blind individuals; Assistive technology for computers, phones employment and daily living
- Skill in evaluating each client's needs and the subsequent preparation and implementation of instructional programs
- Ability to lead and mentor others in the completion of work; organize and coordinate various ongoing instructional programs; apply counseling techniques; evaluate results and revise programs; establish rapport with clients and agencies
