Job Summary
Cover territorial news, current affairs, and Indigenous issues in the Far North by reporting on environment, economy, politics, and social topics. Pitch, research, write, and present reports for newscasts, web pages, and social media while creating vertical videos and online articles. Conduct interviews, arrange field coverage, and file content for all editorial platforms with a focus on digital storytelling. Collaborate daily with colleagues in Iqaluit and Yellowknife, attend assignment meetings, and maintain a network of local contacts. Work full-time on-site in Whitehorse, Yukon, under demanding winter conditions with a valid driver's licence.
Required Qualifications
- Combination of education and experience equivalent to a university degree plus three (3) years' practical, relevant experience in the field
- Excellent writing, storytelling and interviewing skills on both digital and broadcast media
- Comfort with live reporting
- Solid command of French (oral and written comprehension and communication)
- Strong proficiency in English (oral comprehension and communication)
- Knowledge of the Far North, OLMCs, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, Canadian politics and related issues
- High degree of cultural and historical sensitivity toward the Yukon
- Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and programming policies
- Ability to work with a variety of teams but also be a strong self-starter who can work alone as needed
- Critical mind
- Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment
- Experience working on multiple stories simultaneously
- Understanding of the public broadcaster's role and responsibilities
- Valid driver's licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company
- Full-time on-site presence
- Mandatory Criminal record check
Desired Qualifications
- Cross-platform reporter willing to be trained as a videojournalist
- Experience as a videojournalist
- Proficient knowledge of photography, video and editing tools and ability to use lighting kits
- Familiarity with in-house production tools (Dalet, MediaCentral, iNews, Scoop, Hindenburg; Adobe Premiere and Avid)
