Job Summary
Lead the Excess Middle Market underwriting function as Vice President, Underwriting, overseeing a regional team from Jersey City or Newark, NJ. Develop and implement underwriting direction, appetite, and authority; set profitability targets; ensure regulatory and legal compliance; collaborate on business plans, product development, and IT support. Coach and mentor underwriting staff to ensure high-quality decisions, collaborate with Product, Actuarial, Claims, Regulatory, Loss Control, and IT to keep products competitive and profitable, and develop pricing models for various commercial lines. Travel as needed; hybrid work schedule from an office in the Eastern/Central time zones with in-office Monday–Wednesday and remote Thursday–Friday. Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree with extensive underwriting experience (10+ years or 14+ years), strong leadership, broad knowledge of coverages and policy language, risk assessment proficiency, and the ability to lead a team to consistent underwriting decisions. Preferred: Master’s degree and current book of business.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of relevant underwriting experience, or 14 years of relevant underwriting experience
- Strong Underwriting management experience
- Expansive knowledge of the breadth of coverages and lines of business
- Knowledge of underwriting guidelines and industry standards
- High level of risk assessment skills
- Knowledge of financial reporting styles and formats
- Extensive knowledge of policy development, problem-solving, planning, and market savvy
- Extensive knowledge of the insurance industry, regulations and compliance requirements
- Advanced knowledge of underwriting decisions
- Ability to lead and manage a team to produce consistent decisions
- Knowledge of loss development and advanced loss analysis concepts
- Ability to apply coverage features, deductibles, or reinsurance to achieve company objectives
- Strong math aptitude, communication, interpersonal, and negotiating skills
- Eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship
