Job Summary
Externship program offering hands-on, immersive experience in emergency veterinary medicine alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians. You'll engage in triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, inpatient care, and more while shadowing and receiving real-time mentoring. Designed for students enrolled in AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing programs (or programs seeking accreditation) with externship-hour requirements, the program emphasizes skills development, teamwork, and assessing a potential ER career. The externship is flexible in length, location-based at VEG hospitals (e.g., Omaha, NE), and unpaid, with future opportunities for employment consideration. Mentorship and an exciting, fast-paced ER environment are core aspects, along with the chance to determine if ER veterinary medicine is the path you want to pursue.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program
- Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours
- Able to start the program within six months of application
- Current rabies vaccination or titer
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor as well as ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and able to support up to 40 kg with assistance
- Must be willing to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors
- Work well in a fast-paced environment with people from all backgrounds and different personality types
