Job Summary
Veterinary Medical Director provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for all veterinary services within the Sacramento SPCA, overseeing the Shelter Medicine Department, High-Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic, and Vaccine/Wellness services. Responsible for expert medical guidance in complex cases, approval of medical protocols, and leadership of HQHVSN operations (minimum 50 spay/neuter procedures per week with quality outcomes), plus oversight of vaccine clinics, shelter medicine, and compliance with veterinary standards. Leads clinical leadership, staff development, recruitment, budgeting, quality assurance, and cross-department collaboration to optimize animal health outcomes and program efficiency. Requires DVM/VMD, California license, driver’s license, and at least 2 years in shelter/high-volume veterinary leadership; expects a minimum 40-hour workweek with potential for evenings, weekends, and emergency responses.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (VMD) from an accredited institution
- Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in shelter medicine, HQHVSN, or high-volume clinical practice management and leadership
- Valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and perform prolonged clinical and surgical duties
- Minimum 40-hour workweek; evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency response may be required
