Job Summary
Conduct daily diagnostic imaging coverage including blood draws, medicating animals, implanting microchips, and administering vaccines via subcutaneous and intramuscular routes. Assist and/or perform medical tasks under veterinary supervision, including restraining animals for exams, maintaining sterile surgical fields, and performing anesthetic monitoring. Manage incoming surgery animals and their records while ensuring a safe, disease-free environment through rigorous sanitation and laundry duties. Perform clerical responsibilities such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing medical records to maintain an efficient, client-centered practice. Work weekend and holiday shifts in a busy shelter environment, adhering to all federal and state animal health regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year in related field
- Previous work in an animal shelter and/or veterinary clinic
- Excellent computer skills
- Must be able to work with people from a variety of backgrounds who may have different orientations to animals due to cultural traditions
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent animal handling skills
- Must hold a current Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance permit (VACSP) from the California Veterinary Medical Board or have the ability to obtain this license within 30 days of employment
- Must be able to safely restrain large and/or agitated animals
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to and over 150 pounds
- Must be able to work weekend and holiday shifts
- Must be able to work with people from a variety of backgrounds who may have different orientations to animals due to cultural traditions
Desired Qualifications
- Paid or volunteer experience in a shelter, boarding facility, or veterinary hospital
- Proficient use of commercial clinic and shelter software
