Job Summary

Meet with veterans, dependents, and legislators to assess needs, interpret laws, and direct clients to appropriate community agencies for benefits and services. Prepare claims for service-connected disabilities, compose supporting letters, and research grants to secure additional funding for Veterans programs. Maintain the department budget, collaborate with the criminal justice system, and travel to civic groups to disseminate information on available resources. Interpret written materials and explain eligibility criteria while ensuring confidentiality and professional communication throughout all interactions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 2 years of experience in a social service environment with considerable public contact in a professional environment
  • equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Military background
  • valid Oklahoma driver's license
  • satisfactory motor vehicle record
  • close vision
  • knowledge of current laws relating to benefits for Veterans and their dependents
  • knowledge of programs and activities of state, federal and other agencies rendering services to Veterans and their dependents
  • knowledge of budget preparation and control
  • ability to work independently with little supervision
  • ability to work from verbal and written instructions and work orders
  • ability to give clear verbal and written instructions
  • ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals, groups, and related organizations
  • ability to make decisions and take appropriate actions
  • ability to meet schedules and deadlines of the work area
  • ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
  • ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and professionally with Veterans and their dependents
  • ability to maintain confidentiality
