Job Summary
Operate heavy equipment, including bulldozers, excavators, and loaders, to install underground water mains, sanitary sewer systems, and storm drainage. Safely excavate trenches while maintaining proper grade and alignment, then coordinate with pipe crews for backfilling and compaction. Maintain equipment, perform basic repairs, and communicate regularly with crew members and subcontractors to ensure projects complete on schedule and within budget. Follow all trench safety procedures and resolve construction issues as they arise.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3+ years of experience operating heavy equipment in heavy civil construction
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
- Ability to read and interpret utility plans, profiles, grade stakes, and construction specifications
- Understanding of trench safety, excavation procedures, and underground utility installation best practices
Desired Qualifications
- Vocational training in heavy equipment operation
- Experience excavating around existing utilities and working in trenching operations for water, sewer, and storm drain installation
- Experience with government contracts and compliance
- Knowledge of GPS machine control and grade systems
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences
