Job Summary
Conduct technical underwriting for 1,000+ lives in Group Dental, Vision, FMLA, STD, LTD, and Life insurance by determining pricing, designing plans, and negotiating with sales representatives to resolve rate questions and risk concerns. Manage complex cases, document rationales, and utilize underwriting systems to track results while identifying barriers to financial goal achievement. Mentor less experienced underwriters and account management staff through training and coaching initiatives, serving as a go-to resource for irregular administrative requests and technical risk analysis. Lead project teams to develop underwriting processes and recommend policy strategy changes that align with internal results and external competitive positioning.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience with Group Life, Disability, and/or Dental underwriting
- Background in experience-based rating and risk assessment
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and efficiently manage multiple work items and due dates
- Proficiency of Underwriting tools and systems
- Thorough knowledge of Group Insurance products/processes
- Knowledge of local market competition and strategy (e.g., impact on claim pricing and product choices)
- Proven analytical and mathematical skills and ability to apply them to complex cases and issues
- Ability to make decisions, solve problems and meet challenges in completing work
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Proven ability to work independently
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Effective use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications
- Location: Hybrid position requiring 3 days a week in a Guardian office, in commutable proximity to a Guardian Life Hub
- Location: Boston (preferred), Bethlehem PA, NYC or Holmdel NJ
- Visa Sponsorship: Legally authorized to work in the United States, without the need for employer sponsorship/support now or at any time in the future
