Job Summary
Underwriter responsible for residential loan underwriting to agency/investor standards, reviewing loan applications and documentation for accuracy and credit risk, collaborating with loan originators and production staff to obtain required documents, and responding to audits. Must assess borrower repayment ability using income, assets, liabilities, credit history, and collateral; calculate income scenarios including self-employed income; review appraisals and condo projects; and meet production goals (2-3 loans per day). Requires DE certification, knowledge of FNMA/FHLMC/FHA guidelines, and 5-7 years underwriting experience. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; VA SAR/LAPP, renovation, jumbo, USDA experience is a plus. Proficiency with DU, LP, FHA Total Mortgage Scorecard, Encompass, and Microsoft Office is expected; ability to adapt to new LOS systems. Hours 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, Monday–Friday, with potential overtime. Must be able to work in a Milford office or remotely. The role emphasizes thorough risk assessment, compliance, and clear communication within a fast-paced mortgage environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) or work experience equivalent
- 5-7 years previous mortgage underwriting experience
- DE certification for FHA loans required
- Knowledge of agency and investor requirements (FNMA, FHLMC, FHA)
- Experience with Desktop Underwriter, Loan Prospector, and FHA Total Mortgage Scorecard
- Experience with Encompass loan software helpful
- Strong detail orientation and time management
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to meet production/turn-time goals (2-3 loans per day)
- Knowledge of condo project appraisals and underwriting
