Job Summary
Underwriter for the Public Entity (GPE) Underwriting Department onsite at the York, PA office. Responsibilities include (1) completing underwriting qualification and pricing of new business and renewal submissions within delegated authority, (2) requesting additional information when needed and communicating acceptance or declination to producers, (3) maintaining producer/account relationships and serving as primary contact for assigned region, (4) analyzing underwriting information (applications, loss notifications, loss runs, inspections, financial reports, websites, budgets, audits), (5) preparing underwriting approaches for large renewals and new business, (6) ensuring adherence to underwriting authority, (7) applying knowledge of program forms, endorsements and manuscript forms, (8) meeting file documentation standards and audits, (9) ensuring accuracy of final policy product and compliance with state filings, (10) instructing Underwriting Assistants to rate risk per guidelines, (11) requesting additional underwriting information (risk control surveys, insurance to value, driver information, outstanding recommendations), (12) monitoring risk control and claims activities, (13) reviewing transactions exceeding authority and coordinating with Program Manager for approvals, (14) referring accounts for higher-level approvals, and (15) providing support to sales staff and participating in agent meetings and events. The role requires a BA-related degree, professional insurance designations, relevant underwriting experience, licensing, analytical and negotiation skills, and proficiency with IT tools.
Required Qualifications
- BA degree in insurance, business or related field preferred
- Must attain or be working toward AU, CPCU, ARM designation or comparable higher insurance education
- Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Property & Casualty Underwriter, or 3 years of industry experience as an underwriting assistant, CSR or agent/agency management
- Must have or attain within three (3) months current property-casualty license for state of residence and other licenses as may be required
- Has proven performance as an underwriter and/or agency management skill
- Must have a working knowledge of all commercial insurance
- Analytical ability is required to exercise underwriting judgment and make decisions
- Organizational skills and ability to handle tasks on a priority basis required to maintain consistent high quality and quantity of work
- Effective negotiation skills
- Good research skills and detail oriented
- Proficient in IT tools, and software applications
