Job Summary
Underwriter I responsible for profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business by underwriting risks, quoting and binding new submissions and renewals within guidelines, meeting premium production objectives, and marketing First Light products to brokers, prospects, and insureds. The role includes travel to producer/prospect locations, active participation in the underwriting team, accurate file documentation, building relationships with clients and carriers, contributing to training of new underwriting personnel, and ensuring compliance and quality in all activities. Telecommuting opportunities vary by location and business need; some remote options may be available. Requires ability to travel occasionally overnight (~10%) and strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and agency management systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- 1-3 years of previous commercial underwriting (casualty risk) preferred
- Ability to travel occasionally overnight (~10%)
- Analytical and detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Effective negotiation and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and agency management systems
- Ability to build and maintain client and carrier relationships
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Commitment to training and licensing (e.g., CIC, INS, CPCU, AU) preferred
