Job Summary
The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for a nursing student employed as an UNE to consolidate knowledge and skills toward RN or RPN practice under supervision. The UNE delivers patient-centered nursing care, under supervision, with responsibilities shaped by education, policy, and setting—requiring initiative, clinical judgment, collaboration with RPN/RN, and adherence to documentation and confidentiality requirements. The role emphasizes teamwork, professional relationships, culturally respectful care, and flexibility to support various shifts and clinical areas, including medical/surgical or mental health settings, with potential travel to regional facilities. Competencies include critical thinking, communication with patients and families, and the ability to receive guidance and feedback within a just and trusting culture.
Required Qualifications
- Current enrollment in an approved nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse
- Successful completion of the third year or enrolled in third year with a minimum of 450 hours of clinical practice in an approved nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse
- Certification/Licensure/Registration: Registered student in accordance with policies and procedures of the education institution at which they are enrolled in an approved nursing education program
- Proficiency of both official languages is essential for target and designated bilingual positions
- Ability to work as a member of a team and request guidance and consultation
- Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality including paper, electronic formats and other mediums
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license, an all-purpose insured vehicle and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.00
- Moderate to heavy physical effort required
- Will be required to travel to other regional facilities as the position duties may require
- Completion of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search, Adult Abuse Registry Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
