Job Summary

Develop and implement individualized music therapy interventions to treat patients according to their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs. Perform assessments to determine deficits, strengths, and precautions, then establish treatment goals and formulate intervention strategies based on assessed requirements. Conduct systematic evaluations of therapy results, maintain documentation, and assist in patient discharge planning. Act as an active member of the treatment team, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and evaluate procurement of needed resources. Monitor patient safety, foresee potential crises, and address emergency situations involving patients. Assist in orientation, supervision, and professional development of new staff, students, and interns. This role supports the University of Utah Health mission to enhance patient well-being through compassionate, evidence-based care within a Level 1 Trauma Center environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in music therapy or a Music Therapy equivalency
  • Board certification (MT-BC) through the Certification Board for Music Therapists
  • Ability to articulate the purpose, goals, function, and value of music therapy to patients, families, and interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills
  • Ability to implement the proper treatment interventions for individual patients based on assessed needs and limitations
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit(s)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development
  • Ability to assess data regarding the patient's status
  • Ability to foresee problems before they become a crisis
  • Ability to address and resolve crisis situations involving patients
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to carry patients or objects
  • Ability to push, pull, or otherwise move patients or objects

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in music therapy
  • Two years related experience
  • Utah State Certified Music Therapist (SCMT) acquired through DOPL
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Card through the American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire
