Job Summary
Operate an assigned school bus on a daily route, ensuring safe transportation, loading, and unloading of students to and from destinations, including field trips and special events. Conduct pre- and post-bus inspections to verify operating conditions and adherence to Department of Transportation standards. Monitor student conduct, coordinate evacuations, and assist students with special medical needs using specialized equipment. Maintain attendance records, seating charts, and fuel logs while reporting defects to maintenance personnel. Perform routine cleaning, refueling, and route updates under a 40-hour weekly schedule with training lasting 4-5 weeks before moving to a full-time position. Represent the Orange County School District in all customer interactions.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Demonstrated ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work
- Ability to successfully comply with safe driver program standards
- Medical and district certification
- Agency provided County wheelchair certification
- First aid and CPR training
- Dexterity testing
- Valid commercial driver's license class B with passenger and school bus endorsements
- At least 5 years of licensed driving experience
- Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information
- Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations
- Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of assigned passenger vehicles, and safety restraint and wheelchair lift devices
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive and advisory data and information
- Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Ability to calculate decimals and percentages
- Ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership
- Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution
- Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria
- Regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work
- Visual perception and discrimination
- Oral communications ability
