Job Summary
Perform ultrasound examinations under physician direction to identify abnormalities for patient diagnosis, ensuring proper identification, order verification, and patient preparation. Execute exams per department protocol, review images for quality and accuracy, and complete studies within time limits while maintaining infection control and sterile techniques. Assist and instruct students and other Radiology Techs in protocols, procedures, and positioning; provide patient education, comfort, and address concerns. Operate clinical equipment and information systems to ensure quality images, keep accurate records of procedures and adverse reactions, and follow protocols for medical necessity, coding, and equipment failure reporting. Maintain ARDMS registration and modality-specific competency in all clinical and technical functions.
Required Qualifications
- Registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
- Successful completion of one registry pertinent to the department beyond physics (options include OB, abdominal, neuro, breast, pediatric, and vascular)
- Health Services\BCLS - Basic life support (Certification for Healthcare Providers)
- Must have completed a minimum of two additional years of experience relevant to the department post obtaining Ultrasound Tech I
- Primary Children's one of the two years must be pediatric experience
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) Registry - Successful completion of one additional registry pertinent to the department beyond Ultrasound Tech I or (SPI + 2 registries)
- Options include Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), abdominal, neuro, breast, pediatric, Vascular, or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)
- Primary Children's one of the registries must be pediatric
- Must be able to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies
- Must be able to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately
- Must have manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy
- Must be able to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients
- Must be able to bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment
- Must be able to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment
- Must be able to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time
- Must be able to effectively lead and coach others
- Must be able to effectively communicate with patients and other healthcare providers

- Must be able to provide appropriate patient education, ensure patient comfort, and address concerns
- Must be able to ensure proper patient identification, order verification, and prepare the patient for the exam
- Must be able to perform exams per department protocol and review images for quality, clarity, and accuracy
- Must be able to complete studies within acceptable time limits without compromising patient care or quality
- Must be able to maintain American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and modality-specific competency in all clinical and technical functions
- Must be able to thoroughly and accurately complete all required documentation, including time stamps and image storage
- Must be able to understand and operate equipment and related information systems to ensure quality images
