Job Summary
Operate, monitor, and maintain industrial refrigeration systems, including compressors, evaporators, and control systems, while independently troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues. Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on equipment, responding promptly to failures to protect product integrity and plant operations. Actively support ammonia safety and emergency response by serving as a trained responder during incidents, utilizing required PPE, and participating in drills. Complete work orders, document activities in the CMMS, and ensure strict compliance with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and USDA regulations through mechanical integrity inspections and accurate logging. Work in cold, wet, humid environments supporting raw and fresh product processing, with availability for off-shift, weekend, or emergency coverage.
Required Qualifications
- Must be able to understand labels, read recipes, follow instructions, and communicate effectively
- Must have a minimum of (2) years of mechanic work experience or be a graduate of an industrial maintenance training program
- Must be available for off-shift, weekend, or emergency response coverage
- 3–5 years of industrial refrigeration experience required
- Experience with ammonia refrigeration systems required
- EPA Section 608 Certification preferred or required
- Ammonia refrigeration training (IIAR or equivalent) required or ability to obtain
- Respiratory protection and emergency response training required
- PSM/RMP training participation required
- Strong working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and operating manuals
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Solid understanding of PSM/RMP requirements and safe work practices
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work at heights
- Ability to work in confined spaces and mechanical rooms
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
- Ability to wear respiratory protection and required PPE
- Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules
- Must be willing and able to perform the physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation
Desired Qualifications
- Technical or vocational training in industrial refrigeration, HVAC, or mechanical systems preferred
- Experience in food manufacturing or fresh plant environments strongly preferred
