Job Summary
Develop a truancy and deferment process using a task force and enforce the GTB Juvenile and Children's Code across the six-county service area. Monitor truancy, document progress, and coordinate with Tribal programs, local agencies, and school districts to address attendance problems. Inform parents of recurrent absences, schedule conferences, and implement interventions such as tutoring, remedial instruction, or vocational preparation. Provide counseling for parents and children, assist with assessments, and refer cases to the Tribal Prosecutor or Child Welfare Department when voluntary compliance fails. Collaborate on culturally sensitive programs for Native American students and families while maintaining strict confidentiality and collecting data for grant reports.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Education, or a related field
- 3-5 years of experience working with youths
- Valid Michigan Driver's License
- Insurable by the GTB insurance carrier
- Reliable transportation
- Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation
- Must be willing and able to pass a drug and alcohol urinalysis
- Ability to interpret/communicate school attendance law
- Ability to provide support activities for students and their families
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and outside agencies
- Ability to work with minimal daily supervision as needed
- Must be able to tolerate noise level of students
- Must be able to exercise good judgment regarding when and how to respond to truant students and at-risk students
Desired Qualifications
- Native American preference
- General proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Windows, Word, Excel, and use of associated peripherals, and other Microsoft office products
- Basic general proficiency in 10-key and other office equipment
- Basic math skills
- Ability to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines
- Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action
- Must be able to communicate effectively with Native Americans and their families
- Must be able to provide accurate communication regarding required narrative reports and grant reports
- Must be able to collect and present data
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect
- Exceptional detail and follow-up skills
