Tribal Police Chief

Job Summary
Provide leadership and oversight for all Tribal Police Department operations, including staff supervision, patrol, investigations, strategic planning, budgeting, grant management, and policy compliance. Build strong partnerships with Tribal, local, state, and federal agencies; represent the department at community and interagency meetings; and promote community-oriented policing while ensuring ongoing staff development and accountability. This full-time, salary-exempt position requires 5–10 years of progressive law enforcement leadership experience, preferably in Alaska, along with current Alaska Police Standards Council certification. The role supports Tribal sovereignty and public safety within a culturally responsive environment that values Alaska Native and American Indian peoples.
Required Qualifications
- 5–10 years of progressive law enforcement leadership experience
- Previous command-level experience (Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, or Chief)
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Management, or a related field
- Demonstrated ability to build trust, lead diverse teams, and collaborate with Tribal, local, state, and federal partners
- Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented, and high-pressure environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- A valid Alaska driver's license
- The ability to be insured under CVTC's vehicle insurance policy
- Current Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) certification as a Police Officer
- Eligibility to obtain APSC certification through reciprocity
- Graduation from an APSC-approved basic law enforcement academy
- An equivalent academy recognized by the APSC for reciprocity
- Successful completion of a comprehensive criminal history and background investigation
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening
- Successful completion of a psychological evaluation
- Successful completion of a medical/fitness-for-duty examination
- Successful completion of a polygraph examination
