Traveling Certified Welding Inspector

Job Summary
Perform visual and dimensional weld inspections on structural steel members in accordance with AWS D1.1 and AISC 360 standards. Conduct welder performance qualification testing, verify Welding Procedure Specifications, and requalify welders as needed. Review erection drawings and coordinate with NDE technicians for non-destructive testing reports. Document all inspections, non-conformances, and corrective actions in daily QC reports and assemble quality documentation packages for client submittal. Serve as the on-site point of contact for third-party inspectors and AHJs, resolving field welding issues in real time. This 100% field-based role requires continuous travel between active job sites nationwide, often on short notice, with extended overnight assignments. A current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is required, along with 3–5 years of hands-on experience in structural steel fabrication or erection.
Required Qualifications
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
- Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on weld inspection experience in structural steel fabrication and/or erection
- Solid working knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code and AISC fabrication/erection standards
- Familiarity with ASTM material specifications
- Experience testing and qualifying welders
- Experience reviewing/verifying WPS, PQR, and WPQ documentation
- Comfortable reading structural drawings, weld symbols, and connection details
- Ability to catch discrepancies before they become field problems
- Working familiarity with NDE methods (UT, MT, PT, RT)
- Strong written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Comfortability picking up project documentation or QC tracking software
- Willingness and ability to travel 100% of the time, including extended overnight and multi-week assignments away from home
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screen
Desired Qualifications
- ASNT Level II (UT/MT/PT) certification
- AISC/IAS fabricator inspection experience
