Job Summary
The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the collection and abstraction of data for the trauma registry to support verification as a Level III Trauma Center and compliance with national standards. Responsibilities include identifying cases for inclusion from sources such as the Master Patient Index, ED log, and Trauma Log; assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-PCS procedure codes according to Official Coding Guidelines; assigning AIS codes per AAAM AIS guidelines; daily chart review and data entry into the Trauma Registry; reporting complications and quality issues to the Trauma PI Coordinator; ensuring adherence to data management protocols for accurate and timely regulatory reporting; and assisting with performance improvement activities. Preferred certifications include CAISS, CSTR, CPC, CCS, RHIA, or RHIT; work experience in trauma/surgery registry abstraction/coding; and ongoing education in medical terminology and anatomy/physiology. Required Qualifications
- One (1) year work experience in registry data abstraction/coding
- Two (2) years experience in medical data abstraction/coding
- Proficiency with MS Office software including email, MS-Word, and MS-Excel
- Experience in trauma or surgery registry abstraction/coding
- Abstracting experience using current requirements by state and national regulatory bodies.
- Experience with accurate and timely data entry and verification to maintain high standards of data quality control
- Education/training: Completion of ICD-10 coding courses
- Completion of college-level Anatomy/Physiology courses
- Completion of college-level Medical Terminology courses
- Preferred: Associate’s Degree in any field that includes two semesters of medical terminology and Anatomy/Physiology, or in medical records coding from an accredited program.
