Job Summary
Maintenance and construction work on State Maintained roads, including pipe installation, shoulder and ditch maintenance, asphalt patching, and installation of traffic control devices and erosion control devices. Operates heavy equipment (backhoe, track hoe, track loader, skid steer, dump truck) under supervision. Responds to emergencies (traffic accidents, snow/ice removal). Reads and interprets plans; plans, monitors, and adjusts resources, ensures safety standards, maintains documentation. May transport inmates for work detail and must obtain/in possession of a valid NC CDL with Tanker endorsement or obtain within specified timeframe. Pre-employment drug testing and background checks required. Lifts up to 50 lbs; safety-toed shoes required. Provides training and supervision to others and may oversee a work crew. State employment requires compliance with EEO policies and benefits eligibility.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on date of hire, OR the NC CDL must be obtained within 360 days of hire through on-the-job training and FMCSA requirements.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
- Safety-toed shoes required.
- Must be able to transport inmates for work detail; inmate card required after background check.
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid NC Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement (N) or obtain within 360 days of hire.
