Job Summary
Transportation Worker II in Forsyth County Maint. supports highway upkeep for NC Department of Transportation. Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment (patch truck, dump truck, sweeper, roller, skid steer), installing traffic and erosion-control devices, crack sealing, asphalt patching, pipe culverts, and safe operation under varying conditions, including emergencies and night work. The role involves transporting inmates (inmate card required), compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, pre-employment background checks, and drug testing. Requires English communication, safety awareness, and possession or rapid acquisition of a NC Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements within 360 days; adaptable to field maintenance tasks and working in potentially harsh environments.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License or the NC CDL with Tanker endorsement; or obtain CDL through on-the-job training within 360 days of hire
- Pre-employment drug testing
- Ability to operate motor vehicles legally and communicate effectively in English
- Experience with equipment such as backhoes, tandem dump trucks, motor graders, front end loaders, forklifts, asphalt distributors/patchers, crack sealing machines, track excavators, skid steers or sweepers; experience in pipe installation, erosion control, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching
- Knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace Safety policies
