Job Summary

Diagnose minor mechanical problems using diagnostic equipment and perform routine bus maintenance, preventive care, and tire rotation. Lubricate chassis parts, replace fluids and filters, and repair brakes, windows, seats, and lifts. Clean fuel and electrical systems, test batteries, and adjust headlights while inspecting vehicles for defects. Remove minor dents and apply spray paint as needed. Maintain high safety and housekeeping standards, keep accurate timecards, and perform other duties specified by the Transportation Director. Requires a Class A CDL with N and P&S endorsements, N.C. School Bus Inspector Certification, and physical ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Reports to the Transportation Director at Carteret County Public Schools.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate or GED
  • CDL license or ability to obtain one
  • Appropriate North Carolina driver's license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles (Class A CDL)
  • N, P&S endorsements
  • N.C. School Bus Inspector Certification
  • Ability to physically perform most repairs
  • Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally)
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments

Desired Qualifications

  • Some experience and training with vehicle operation, maintenance and repair
