Job Summary
Lead on-site vehicle mechanics and mechanic assistants, performing major mechanical repairs, diagnostics, and inspections on district vehicles with minimal supervision. Rebuild and replace major components including engines, transmissions, and electrical systems while maintaining accurate preventive maintenance records. Assign work to assistants, inspect completed tasks for quality, and help train new staff. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed, strictly adhering to safety procedures and reporting hazardous conditions immediately. Maintain shop equipment and tools in safe operating condition while managing irregular hours and occasional prolonged shifts. Work in environments with extreme temperatures, loud noise, and exposure to chemicals.
Required Qualifications
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and physical exam
- Ability to access and use service materials
- Ability to operate bus
- Ability to communicate effectively with others
- Experience as a mechanic
