Job Summary
Teach and assist special needs students with loading and unloading buses, proper seating, buckling seat belts, and functional life skills like hygiene tasks. Provide physical and emotional support while supervising children during emergency drills and maintaining assigned bus cleanliness. Relay messages between parents, teachers, and staff, and communicate perceived student problems to school personnel. Follow oral and written instructions from teachers, staff, and caregivers while adhering to district policies and safety regulations. Serves as the primary information source for substitute drivers and staff. Maintain high ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information. Participate in assigned in-service training programs.
Required Qualifications
- 21 years of age or older
- Willing to obtain a CDL (commercial driver's license if necessary)
- Strong communications skills, written and verbal
- Ability to operate wheelchair lifts, ramps, and securement locks
- Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear
- Stand
- Use hands to finger, handle, or feel
- Reach with hands and arms
- Frequent walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing and pulling
- Moderate lifting and/or carrying up to 50 pounds or more
- Regular and dependable level of attendance
- Follow oral and written instructions of teachers, school staff, and the parents or the responsible caregiver of the child
- Follows district policies, rules and regulations, and observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
- Supervises children during emergency drills
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students
- Participates in in-service training programs as assigned
Desired Qualifications
- Certified in special needs assistance training preferred
- Certified in CPR and first aid; or ability to certify
